Fear

I'm reading posts made by scared colleagues about Entheogens on Facebook. And realizing how many "shamanicly inclined" people it's out there which are so very scared of what they don't understand.

(Firstly I want to point out that in this post I am strictly talking about the religious use of Entheogens practiced by experienced Shamans. Do not confuse this topic with something else or generalize.)

An introduction to Shamanism

The word shaman means "He/she who knows". It is a word in the Evenki language (Tungus) from Siberia in the north of Asia and was introduced to the West in the 1500s.
Through frequent use, it has become a widely accepted loanword to describe the phenomenon that shamans practice worldwide. But it is a vague word and should be used more as a useful indication of what we are discussing, rather than an absolute identification of something.

Some thoughts on Shamanic practice

Shamanic knowledge are often refereed to as simply being a series of techniques. Michael Harner did some interesting work putting together what he dubbed as Core-shamanism, and later "Core" started to become synonym with western Shamanism. But not many seems to understand that this was his version of Shamanism. Not Shamanism per se or in itself.

Captain AhabWhile we struggle with religious beliefs and trying to determine which way is right and which might be wrong. Everything keeps on going and we're in there with it. Our view on life comes out of the current perspective we have. If we change perspective our life changes with it.

We can try and control and change the constructs of life to match our beliefs and dreams, or we can go with it. And let it take us along wherever it wants us to go. We are apart of life whether we understand it or not, so we havent got much to loose by giving up control. We only just think we are in control anyway.
