Doing a Shamanic Outdoor Sitting

Submitted by Peter on

An interesting way of shamanic learning which can be both an profound adventure as well as moving spiritual experience is doing an outdoor Sitting in nature, also known as "Utesittning" in the northern tradition or "Vision Quest" in Native American cultures.

First off you need to understand that it is very important to recognize that this is a spiritual practice and a way of meditation and should not be taken lightly. So do it because it means something important and research the traditions of doing a sitting before you do.

An introduction to Shamanism

The word shaman means "He/she who knows". It is a word in the Evenki language (Tungus) from Siberia in the north of Asia and was introduced to the West in the 1500s.
Through frequent use, it has become a widely accepted loanword to describe the phenomenon that shamans practice worldwide. But it is a vague word and should be used more as a useful indication of what we are discussing, rather than an absolute identification of something.

Everything changes if the perspective is different

I went on a vision quest a couple of years back. I was searching for answers in my own life and were trying to find a good path which would lead me to better places.

A little simplified, a vision quest is a rite where you go out in nature searching for spiritual guidance and purpose. Often you spend time sitting alone in a predesignated spot while waking and fasting, and will remain there until the quest is over or the Shaman (don't go out alone) brings you back.

I learned a very valuable lesson while being out there. And I wish to share some of it.

Some thoughts on Shamanic practice

Shamanic knowledge are often refereed to as simply being a series of techniques. Michael Harner did some interesting work putting together what he dubbed as Core-shamanism, and later "Core" started to become synonym with western Shamanism. But not many seems to understand that this was his version of Shamanism. Not Shamanism per se or in itself.

Participate in a Full Moon Ceremony

I would encourage everyone to participate in the next Full Moon Ceremony on the 8th of Mars. The ceremony is being held all around the earth, organized by DrummingfortheEarth.org as to help wake up everybody to what is happening in the world.

It's sort of a Occupy Wall street/Shamanic/Activism movement. And unless you are happy being part of the 99% who is regarded as sheep by the ruling "Elite", you need to help out to.
